In 2019 we worked together with Danish Air Transport (DAT) on a project to develop a new colour scheme for one of their McDonnell Douglas MD-82 airliners.
After weeks of finalising the concept and revision rounds, we came up with a retro scheme. This is to honour the classic MD-82, one of the very last of its kind in the whole of Europe.

When we heard that this project involved the MD80 we just had to go retro with the design. . The legendary T-tailed twin-jet bound to be extinct from European skies deserved a love-letter of a livery. Njord and I collaborated to do the thing that had to be done for Danish Air Transport on their 30th anniversary. A retro-style livery.
The classic "super 80" look
GOING RETRO
With 80’s playlists on, we went to the drawing table and came relatively quickly to a design. Inspired by the colours of the Danish flag, we went for a livery with a classic cheatline, a mask under the cockpit windows and a black dot on the radome. Back in the day, the MD-80 used to have the nickname “MadDog”. This originates from the way the plane looks like a dog, with the black dot on the radome. This look with the name MD embodies for the nickname MadDog.

STUDYING THE MADDOG
THE MD80 LEGACY
The MD-82, is a narrowbody airliner that was developed from the DC-9 by McDonnell Douglas in the late 1970’s/early 1980s. The DC-9 “Super80” was a common sight in many airports all over the world. Now in 2019, only a few operators remain. In 2019, after the retirement of the Meridiana MD-80 fleet, only DAT and European Air Charter remain. This is where our inspiration for the concept came from. Going retro and focusing on the legacy of this iconic aeroplane was the way to go.
